هٰذَا بَاْبٌ مِنَ الْمَصَاْدِرِ
جَرَى مَجْرَى الْفِعْلِ الْمُضَاْرِعِ في عَمَلِهِ وَمَعْنَاْهُ

هٰذَا بَاْبٌ مِنَ الْمَصَاْدِرِ 1٧١٦٠٩ this is a topic of the maṣdars
جَرَى مَجْرَى الْفِعْلِ الْمُضَاْرِعِ في عَمَلِهِ وَمَعْنَاْهُ 2٤١٣٢٧ following the course of the co-homologous action in its elaboration and its meaning
وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُكَ عَجِبْتُ مِنْ ضَرْبٍ زَيْدًا 3٩١٢٩٥ and that is your saying ʕajib-tu min ḍarbᵢₙ zaydᵃⁿ
«I was surprised by a striking of Zayd»
«I was surprised by (someone's) striking Zayd»
«I was surprised from (a) striking[gen] Zayd[acc]»
فَمَعْنَاْهُ أَنَّهُ يَضْرِبُ زَيْدًا 4٤٦٧١٥ well its meaning is that he strikes Zayd
It would be surprising indeed if a man striking Zayd were to say “I am surprised by (my) striking Zayd”, so the inference here is that Sībawayhi means “surprised that [somebody] is striking Zayd”. The focus here is not on the identity of the striker, but on the tense/aspect of the action: the maṣdar ضَرْبٍ has the verbal force of the imperfect verb يَضْرِبُ.
وَتَقُوْلُ عَجِبْتُ مِنْ ضَرْبٍ زَيْدًا بَكْرٌ 5٩٦٦٧١ and you say ʕajib-tu min ḍarbᵢₙ zaydᵃⁿ Bakrᵘⁿ
«I was surprised by Bakr's striking Zayd»
«I was surprised from (a) striking[gen] (of) Zayd[acc] (by) Bakr[nom]»
وَمِنْ ضَرْبٍ زَيْدٌ عَمْرًا إِذَا كَاْنَ هُوَ الْفَاْعِلُ 6٤٣٤٦٨ and min ḍarbᵢₙ zaydᵘⁿ ʕamrᵃⁿ
«by Zayd's striking Amr»
«from (a) striking[gen] (by) Zayd[nom] (of) Amr[acc]»
when he
I.e. Zayd.
is the enactant
كَأَنَّهُ قَاْلَ عَجِبْتُ مِنْ أَنَّهُ يَضْرِبُ زَيْدٌ عَمْرًا 7١٦٤٥٢ as if he said ʕajib-tu min ˀanna-hu yaḍrib zaydᵘⁿ ʕamrᵃⁿ
«I was surprised that Zayd is striking Amr»
«I was surprised by that it is the case that Zayd[nom] is striking Amr[acc]»
وَ يَضْرِبُ عَمْرًا زَيْدٌ 8٦٦٥٥٠ and yaḍrib ʕAmrᵃⁿ Zaydᵘⁿ
he strikes Amr[acc], Zayd[nom]
وَإِنَّمَا خَاْلَفَ هٰذَا الِاسْمَ الَّذِي جَرَى مَجْرَى الْفِعْلِ الْمُضَاْرِعِ 9٤٣٧٧٧ and indeed this contravenes the nominal that follows the course of the co-homologous action
I.e. the participle, which “behaves like” the imperfect verb, which is co-homologous to the participle.
في أَنَّ فِيْهِ فَاْعِلًا وَمَفْعُوْلًا 10٨٥٥٦٧ in that in it
I.e. in the maṣdar.
are an enactant and a coactum
لِأَنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ هٰذَا ضَاْرِبٌ 11٢٨٧١٣ since if you say hāðă ḍāribᵘⁿ
«This one is striking»
«This one will strike»
«This one is a striker»
فَقَدْ جِئْتَ بِالْفَاْعِلِ وَذَكَرْتَهُ 12١٧٥٢٩ then you have come with the enactant and you have mentioned it
وَإِذَا قُلْتَ عَجِبْتُ مِنْ ضَرْبٍ 13٤٤٠٥٥ and when you say ʕajib-tu min ḍarbᵢₙ
«I was surprised by a striking»
«I was surprised from a striking[gen]»
فَإِنَّكَ لَمْ تَذْكُرْ الْفَاْعِلَ 14٧٥٠٩٧ then indeed you have not mentioned the enactant
فَالْمَصْدَرُ لَيْسَ بِالْفَاْعِلِ 15١٢٥٤٤ for the maṣdar is not the enactant
وَإِنْ كَاْنَ فِيْهِ دَلِيْلٌ عَلَى الْفَاْعِلِ 16٠٧٩١٧ even if there is in it an indication on the enactant
فَلِذٰلِكَ احْتَجْتَ فِيْهِ إِلَى فَاْعِلٍ وَمَفْعُوْلٍ 17٥٦٢٩٦ so due to that, you need in it an enactant and a coactum
وَلَمْ تَحْتَجْ حِيْنَ قُلْتَ هٰذَا ضَاْرِبٌ زَيْدًا إِلَى فَاْعِلٍ ظَاْهِرٍ 18٨٣٩٣٩ and you do not need, when you say hāðă ḍāribᵘⁿ zaydᵃⁿ
«This one strikes Zayd»
«This one is striking[nom] Zayd[acc]»
