| هٰذَا بَاْبٌ مِنْ الْإِضَاْفَةِ تَحْذِفُ فِيْهِ يَاْءَيْ الْإِضَاْفَةِ | 1٩٢٦٧٧ | this is a topic of association in which you excise the YāɁs[2] of association |
| وَذٰلِكَ إذَا جَعَلْتَهُ صَاْحِبَ شَيْءٍ يُزَاْوِلُهُ أَوْ ذَا شَيْءٍ | 2٩٣٠٧٤ | and that is when you make him owner of something he pursues or possessor of something |
| أَمَّا مَا يَكُوْنُ صَاْحِبَ شَيْءٍ يُعَاْلِجُهُ | 3٧٠٨٦٤ | as for what is owner of something that he practices |
| فَإِنَّهُ مِمَّا يَكُوْنُ فَعَّاْلًا | 4٦٩٦١٤ | well indeed it is often faʕʕālᵃⁿ |
| وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُكَ لِصَاْحِبِ الثِّيَاْبِ ثَوَّاْبٌ | 5٣٣٢٥٩ |
and that is your saying for
the owner of clothing
θawwābᵘⁿ a garment-monger (or maker?)
|
| وَلِصَاْحِبِ الْعَاْجِ عَوَّاْجٌ | 6٤١٨٤٥ |
and for the owner of ivory
ʕawwājᵘⁿ ivory-monger (or craftsman?)
|
| وَلِصَاْحِبِ الْجِمَاْلِ الَّتِي يُنْقَلُ عَلَيْهَا جَمَّاْلٌ | 7٥٤٠٥٣ |
and for the owner of
camels upon which something
is conveyed I.e. pack-camels
jammālᵘⁿcamel attendant, trader, seller(?)
|
| وَلِصَاْحِبِ الْحُمُرِ الَّتِي يُعْمَلُ عَلَيْهَا حَمَّاْرٌ | 8٤٤٤٢٦ |
and for the owner of
donkeys upon which work is done
ḥammārᵘⁿ master of donkeys (or donkey-monger?)
|
| وَلِلَّذِي يُعَاْلِجُ الصَّرْفَ صَرَّاْفٌ | 9١٨٧٥٧ |
and for someone who practices
money-changing
ṣarrāfᵘⁿ money-changer
|
| وَذَا أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ يُحْصَى | 10١٣٨٣٦ | and that is more-copious than can be counted |
| وَرُبَّمَا أَلْحَقُوْا يَاْءَيْ الْإِضَاْفَةِ كَمَا قَاْلُوْا الْبَتِّيُّ | 11٥١٤٩٤ |
and sometimes they adjoin the
YāɁs[2] of association
as they say
ـl-battiyyᵘ maker or seller of the kind of garment called
بَتٌّ, pl. بُتُوْتٌ or بَتَاْتٌ.

| أَضَاْفُوْهُ إِلَى الْبُتُوْتِ فَأَوْقَعُوْا الْإِضَاْفَةَ عَلَى وَاْحِدِهِ | 12٦٣٤٦٣ |
they associate it to the
butūt a kind of garment called
بَتٌّ, pl. بُتُوْتٌ or بَتَاْتٌ.
so they make the association apply to its singular

| وَقَاْلُوْا الْبَتَّاْتُ | 13١٩٨٧٦ |
and they say
_l-battātᵘ maker or seller of the kind of garment called
بَتٌّ, pl. بُتُوْتٌ or بَتَاْتٌ.
|
| وَأَمَّا مَا يَكُوْنُ ذَا شَيْءٍ وَلَيْسَ بِصَنْعَةٍ يُعَاْلِجُهَا | 14١٦٢١٩ | and as for what is possessor of something and it is not a craft he practices |
| فَإِنَّهُ مِمَّا يَكُوْنُ فَاْعِلًا | 15١٩٧١١ | well indeed it is often fāʕilᵃⁿ |
| وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُك لِذِي الدِّرْعِ دَاْرِعٌ | 16٢٩٨٩٨ |
and that is your saying for possessor
of
_d-dirʕᵢ coat of mail
dāriʕᵘⁿhaving a coat of chain-mail or armour
|
| وَلِذِي النَّبْلِ نَاْبِلٌ | 17٢١٤٠٨ |
and for possessor of
_n-nablᵢ arrows
nābilᵘⁿhaving arrows
|
| وَلِذِي النُّشَّاْبِ نَاْشِبٌ | 18٤٠١١٢ |
and for possessor of
_n-nuššābᵢ arrows
nāšibᵘⁿhaving arrows
|
| وَلِذِي التَّمْرِ تَاْمِرٌ | 19٣٨٦٣٠ |
and for possessor of
ـt-tamrᵢ dates
tāmirᵘⁿhaving dates
|
| وَلِذِي اللَّبَنِ لَاْبِنٌ | 20٨٠٥٣٠ |
and for possessor of
_l-labanᵢ milk
lābinᵘⁿhaving milk
|
| قَاْلَ الْحُطَيْئَةَ | 21٥٥٨١٦ | _l-ḤuṭayɁatᵃ said |
| 22٧٣٨٨٢ | ||
| وَتَقُوْلُ لِمَنْ كَاْنَ شَيْءٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَشْيَاْءِ صَنْعَتُهُ لَبَّاْنٌ وَتَمَّاْرٌ وَنَبَّاْلٌ | 23٠٧٦٠٨ |
and you say for one whose craft
is a thing of these things
labbānᵘⁿ milk-monger
and
tammārᵘⁿdate-monger
and
nabbālᵘⁿarrow-monger or maker
|
| وَلَيْسَ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْ هٰذَا قِيْلَ هٰذَا | 24١٩٦١٥ | and this is not said in every thing of this |
| أَلَا تَرَى أَنَّكَ لَا تَقُوْلُ لِصَاْحِبِ الْبُرِّ *بَرَّاْرٌ | 25٣٧٠٨٤ |
surely you see that you do not say
for the owner of
_l-burrᵢ wheat
*barrārᵘⁿ*wheat-monger
|
| وَلَا لِصَاْحِبِ الْفَاْكِهَةِ *فَكَّاْهٌ | 26٤٨٥٤٩ |
nor for
for the owner of
_l-fākihatᵢ fruit
*fakkāhᵘⁿ*fruit-monger
|
| وَلَا لِصَاْحِبِ الشَّعِيْرِ *شَعَّاْرٌ | 27٩٤٧٨٧ |
nor for
for the owner of
_š-šaʕīrᵢ barley
*šaʕʕārᵘⁿ*barley-monger
|
| وَلَا لِصَاْحِبِ الدَّقِيْقِ *دَقَّاْقٌ | 28٢٩٢٧٦ |
nor for
for the owner of
_d-daqīqᵢ flour
*daq²āqᵘⁿ*flour-monger
|
| وَتَقُوْلُ مَكَاْنٌ آهِلٌ أَيْ ذُو أَهْلٍ | 29٢٦٧٢٤ |
and you say
makānᵘⁿ Ɂāhilᵘⁿ populated place
i.e. having folk
|
| وَقَاْلَ ذُو الرُّمَّةَ | 30٧٥١٤٦ | and Ðū _r-Rummatᵃ said |
| 31٦٨٧١٦ | ||
| وَقَاْلُوْا لِصَاْحِبِ الْفَرَسِ فَاْرِسٌ | 32٩٣٨٧٢ |
and they say
for the owner of
_l-farasᵢ horse
fārisᵘⁿhorseman; master of the horse
|
| وَقَاْلَ الْخَلِيْلُ إنَّمَا قَاْلُوْا عِيْشَةٌ رَاْضِيَةٌ وَطَاْعِمٌ وَكَاْسٍ عَلَى ذَا | 33٩١٢٣٨ |
and al-Khalīl said: rather they say
ʕīšatᵘⁿ rāḍiyatᵘⁿ a state or sort of life that is found pleasing (Lane)
and
ṭāʕimᵘⁿhaving a good state or condition in respect
of food (Lane)
and
kāsᵢₙhaving clothing
on that
|
| أَيْ ذَاْتُ رِضًا وَذُو كِسْوَةٍ وَطَعَاْمٍ | 34٩١١٨١ |
I.e.
ðātᵘ riḍᵃⁿ having state of being pleased
and
ðū kiswatᵢₙhaving clothing
and
ṭaʕāmᵢₙfood
|
| وَقَاْلُوْا نَاْعِلٌ لِذِي النَّعْلِ | 35٩٦٤٦٦ |
and they say
nāʕilᵘⁿ wearing sandals
for possessor of
_n-naʕlᵢsandals
|
| وَقَاْلَ الشَّاْعِرُ | 36٩٢٥٠٥ | and the poet said |
| 37٠٣٨٨٨ | ||
| أَيْ لِـهَمٍّ ذِي نَصَبٍ | 38٧٤٣٧٢ |
I.e. for a
hammᵢₙ grief, anxiety, worry, concern
having
naṣabᵢₙfatigue, weariness
|
| وَقَاْلُوْا بَغَّاْلٌ لِصَاْحِبِ الْبَغْلِ | 39٨٩٥٠٩ |
and they say
baġġālᵘⁿ owner or attendant of mules
for the owner of
_l-baġlᵢmules
|
| شَبَّهُوْهُ بِاْلأَوَّلِ حَيْثُ كَاْنَتِ الإِضَاْفَةُ | 40٧٧١٢٣ | they assimilate it to the preceding when there is association |
| لأَنَّهُمْ يُشَبِّهُوْنَ الشَّيْءَ بِالشَّيْءِ وَإِنْ خَاْلَفَهُ | 41٣٦٣١٦ | since they assimilate the thing to the thing even if it disagrees with it |
| وقَاْلُوْا لِذِي السَّيْفِ سَيَّاْفٌ وَلِلْجَمِيْعِ سَيَّاْفَةٌ | 42٩٧٢٩٤ |
and they say for the owner of
_s-sayfᵢ the sword
sayyāfᵘⁿswordsman; maker/seller of swords
and for the plural
sayyāfatᵘⁿswordsmen
|
| وَقَاْلَ امْرُؤُ الْقَيْسِ | 43٠٥٦٦٢ | and _ImruɁᵘ _l-Qaysᵢ said |
| 44٦٣٥٦٢ | ||
| يُرِيْدُ وَلَيْسَ بِذِي نَبْلٍ | 45٩٤٤٥٥ |
he intends
wa-laysa bi-ðī nablᵢₙ and not having arrows
|
| فَهٰذَا وَجْهُ مَا جَاْءَ مِنْ الْأَسْمَاْءِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ فِعْلٌ | 46٨٩٢٦١ |
so this is the way of
what comes of nominals and for which there is
no action The forms listed in this chapter (فَعَّال
and فاعِل) may express action (verbal “force”)
in other uses (e.g. as participles), but when they
express إضافة “association”, as here,
they function as nominals and do not express action.
