| هٰذَا بَاْبُ مَا يَعْمَلُ فِي الْأَفْعَاْلِ فَيَجْزِمُهَا | 1٢١٢٢٩ | this is the topic of what elaborates in the actions, so it truncates them |
| وَذٰلِكَ لَمْ وَلَمَّا | 2٠٦٢٤٩ |
and that is
lam past neg. particle
and
lammāpast perf. neg. particle
|
| وَاللَّاْمُ الَّتِي فِي الْأَمْرِ وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُكَ لِيَفْعَلْ | 3٧٦٠٢٨ |
and the lâm that is in commanding
and that is your saying
li-yafʕal may he do, let him do
|
| وَلَا فِي النَّهْيِ وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ | 4٠١٩١٦ |
and
lā impef. neg. particle
in prohibition and that is your saying
lā tafʕaldo not do
|
| فَإِنَّمَا هُمَا بِمَنْزِلَةِ لَمْ | 5٩٨١٦٦ |
well they[2] are just with the
disposition of
lam past neg. particle
|
| وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ هَذِهِ اللَّاْمَ وَلَا فِي الدُّعَاْءِ | 6٠٧٠٦٨ |
and know that this lâm and
lā not
in beseeching
|
| بِمَنْزِلَتِهِمَا فِي الْأَمْرِ وَالنَّهْيِ | 7٢٦٢٢٠ | are with their[2] disposition in command and prohibition |
| وَذٰلِكَ قَوْلُكَ لَا يَقْطَعِ اللهُ يَمِيْنَكَ | 8٦٧٩١١ |
and that is your saying
lā yaqṭaʕ allāhᵘ yamīnᵃ-ka
«May God not cut of your oath»
|
| وَلَيَجْزِكَ اللهُ خَيْرًا | 9٠٣٦٣٠ |
and
li-yajzᵢ-ka allāhᵘ xayrᵃⁿ «May God reward you with good»
|
| وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ هَذِهِ اللَّاْمَ | 10٠٢١٤٦ | and know that this lâm, |
| قَدْ يَجُوْزُ حَذْفُهَا فِي الشِّعْرِ وَتَعْمَلُ مُضْمَرَةً | 11٥٤٠٣٨ | its excision may pass in poetry and it may elaborate implicitly |
| كَأَنَّهُمْ شَبَّهُوْهَا بِــأَنْ إذَا أَعْمَلُوْهَا مُضْمَرَةً | 12١٥٣٩٧ |
as that they assimilate it to
Ɂan that
when they make it elaborate implicitly
|
| وَقَاْلَ الشَّاْعِرُ | 13١٠٨٨٤ | they poet said |
| 14٣٦٨٢٧ | ||
| وَإنَّمَا أَرَاْدَ لِتَفْدِ | 15٢٠٤٠٠ |
he just intended
li-tafdi may you ransom (i.e. لِتَفْدِيَ)
|
| وَقَاْلَ مُتَمِّمُ بْنُ نُوَيْرَةَ | 16١٠٠٣٤ | and Mutammimᵘ bnᵘ Nuwayratᵃ said |

| أَرَاْدَ لِيَبْكِ | 18٦٠٥٤٩ |
he intended
li-yabki may he weep (i.e. لِيَبْكِيَ li-yabkiya)
|
| وَقَاْلَ أُحَيْجَةُ بْنُ الْجُلَاْحِ | 19٦٠٨٨٧ | and ɁUḥayjatᵘ bnᵘ _l-Julāḥᵢ said |
| 20٥٧٣٨١ | ||
| وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ حُرُوْفَ الْجَزْمِ لَا تَجْزِمُ إِلَّا الْأَفْعَاْلَ | 21٣٥٥٤٢ | and know that the terms of truncation do not truncate anything except actions |
| وَلَا يَكُوْنُ الْجَزْمُ إِلَّا فِي هَذِهِ الْأَفْعَاْلِ الْمُضَاْرِعَةِ لِلْأَسْمَاْءِ | 22٠٩٣٤١ | and truncation is not in anything except these actions that are co-homologous to the nominals |
| كَمَا أَنَّ الْجَرَّ لَا يَكُوْنُ إِلَّا فِي الْأَسْمَاْءِ | 23٨٧٠٣٥ | just like that retraction is not except in the nominals |
| وَالْجَزْمُ فِي الْأَفْعَاْلِ نَظِيْرُ الْجَرِّ فِي الْأَسْمَاْءِ | 24٦٩١٣٨ | and truncation in the actions is the counterpart of retraction in the nominals |
| فَلَيْسَ لِلِاسْمِ فِي الْجَزْمِ نَصِيْبٌ | 25٣٣٢٣٩ | for there is no portion for the nominal in truncation |
| وَلَيْسَ لِلْفِعْلِ فِي الْجَرِّ نَصِيْبٌ | 26٧٨٠٧٠ | and there is no portion for the action in retraction |
| فَمِنْ ثَمَّ لَمْ يُضْمِرُوْا الْجَاْزِمَ | 27٩١٦٨٥ | so from there they do not make the truncator implicit |
| كَمَا لَمْ يُضْمِرُوْا الْجَاْرَّ | 28٧١٧٣٥ | like they do not make the retractor implicit |
| وَقَدْ أَضْمَرَهُ الشَّاْعِرُ شَبَّهَهُ بِإِضْمَاْرِهِمْ رُبَّ | 29٦٠٦٧٨ |
and the poet has made it implicit
and assimilated it to their making
rubba some; many

| وَوَاْوَ الْقَسَمِ فِي كَلَاْمِ بَعْضِهِمْ | 30٩٥٣٩٧ | and to the wāw of swearing [an oath] in the speech of some of them |
